2024 Packing Workshops

Are you thinking about packing into the backcountry with your horses/mules/donkeys? Trying to figure out how to make hunting season a little easier on yourself? Do you already pack but are looking for some new ideas?

Come join us for some one-day packing workshop fun this year!

We’ll be going over all things packing, from selecting and training your pack animal (yes, hobble training too), trip planning, navigation, different types of gear, tying hitches and packing without fancy knots, camp and highline set up, feeding yourself and your stock, and how to be (mostly) warm and safe while enjoying the backcountry with your equines.

I take the Mustangs and my German Shepherds into the backcountry for fun and pack a fairly straightforward load pretty much knot-free. I could live on dried fruit and jerky for a week just so I don’t have to cook.

So I talked Trevor Barzar with Front Range Back Country Horsemen into doing these workshops together. Trevor packs with his Mustang and mule. He hunts and does trail work, so he knows how to properly secure game on his pack animal, and safely transport anything from hay to chainsaws and the world’s most enormous bedroll in both mantied and non-mantied loads. Trevor takes backcountry cuisine pretty seriously, to the point of packing in a griddle and pop up oven for top notch cooking in the wilderness.

With some luck we might have some of our mentors join us for one or more of the workshops. Either way, we’re committed to keeping the art of horse packing alive!
